This is what zirconia porcelain looks like.
Zirconia ZrO2 can be described as the crystalline oxide in zirconium. Its colour is typically monoclinic and black. Zirconia, one of its most important materials, is very popular.
Zirconia (a form of ceramic material) is used to make medical devices. However, it can also be used in other industries for parts and products.
This structure, like other ceramic materials contains metal atoms. It raises the question about zirconia being a type of ceramic. Because zirconia has both the innate strength and the biocompatibility that ceramics offer, this allows it to be combined with metals.
Most common zirconia grades
Yttria partially stabilized zirconia YYZ
Youtria partially stabilized zirconia, or Y-PSZ (Yttria partial stabilized Zirconia) can be doped with the yttrium alloy (Y2O3) as an stabilizer. The material is transformed from monoclinic (tetragonal) to tetragonal. It is a form of fine grain material which has the highest possible bending force of all ceramics. It's very resistant to impact and wear as well as having low thermal conductivity. It often makes a good substitute for metal. The material's high toughness can be achieved by the addition of yttrium ore (Yttria), which transforms it and makes it tougher. A material that is under stress will have a crystal structure change from tetragonal and monoclinic. The result is a 3-5% increase to its local volume. By increasing the volume, cracks shrink, limiting their potential to grow or propagate. This material is very resistant to stress fatigue, and has high bending properties.
Magnesium or partially stabilised zirconia.
Zirconia coated with magnesium oxide, (MgO), may also cause compression in the internal matrix. The structure however is cubic. M-PSZ does not experience phase migration, so it has better resistance to heat and humidity. M-PSZ maintains its strength, even under high temperatures or humid conditions.

Zirconia-ceramics Processing
Zirconia can be transformed into complex shapes easily using its raw blanks. The main body of zirconia ceramics will shrink approximately 20% because it is required for the final densification process. These shrinkages make it impossible for pre-sintering to be within very precise tolerances.
When processing and grinding sintered materials, diamond tools should be used in order to meet very tight tolerances. The diamond coated grinding wheel / tool is used to cut the material into desired shapes. It can take a long time and be expensive due to the hardness and inherent toughness of this material.
