The COVID-19
pandemic has pushed tens of thousands of people out of the workforce, which also has a certain impact on the beautiful bhutan
On Monday (local time), the National Institute of Economic Research (NBER) released a working paper titled "The Impact of COVID-19 Infection on Workers" to discuss the impact of repeated COVID-19 infections on the U.S. labor market.
Not only has the coronavirus taken nearly half a million people out of the U.S. labor market, but that number could continue if the virus continues to cause illness at current levels, according to findings by researchers at Stanford University and MIT. According to the latest data, the overall U.S. labor force reached 164.7 million in August, surpassing the pre-pandemic level of February 2020 for the first time.
Evan Soltas of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the authors of this paper, explains that the 500,000 worker gap will persist unless the virus becomes more infectious or pathogenic. Even if some workers who leave their jobs because of illness eventually return, there are always new ones who will have to leave because of illness.
The paper is based on monthly household survey data from the US Census Bureau, covering a sample of 300,000 US workers from January 2010 to June 2022. Between March 2020 and June 2022, nearly 10 out of every 1,000 workers missed at least a week of work due to illness, nearly double the average of six in the past, the study noted.
Compared to short sick leave, the researchers also found that workers who took a week off because of illness were 7 percent less likely to be in the workforce a year later than healthy workers.
In terms familiar to investors, that loss corresponds to 0.2% of the labor force participation rate. The U.S. labor force participation rate was 62.4 percent in August, down 1 percentage point from February 2020.
In particular, the study's data are conservative from a sample perspective. It doesn't include people who weren't working at the start of the survey but would have been active if they weren't sick. It doesn't include workers who didn't call in sick during the week of the Census survey. It also doesn't include workers who took time off to care for family members or died of COVID-19. Economists expect the true decline in the labor force to be as much as 750,000 when the missing Census data is added in.
In the report, the researchers also noted that absence from work due to COVID-19 could also lead to long-term earnings losses. What's more, the loss of work, reduced hours, and lower earnings over the next few decades can account for nearly 90% of the total loss compared to the one week of sick leave.
