Teslas vice president of legal affairs and acting general counsel, Alan Prescott, has left the electric vehicle leader to join lidar company Luminar as a chief legal officer, according to media reports on Wednesday.
In response to an interview with the media, Prescott said Luminar has pioneered key safety technologies that will drive the future of autonomous driving. As someone who has devoted his entire career to automotive safety and innovation, he looks forward to helping Luminar take it to the next level and fulfill his mission of making transportation safer for everyone.
The move adds a bit of extra interest, given that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly said radar technology is "too expensive" and not necessary to "develop autonomous vehicles."
Bill Berry, who joined Tesla in October as head of litigation, will take over the companys legal department, according to a person familiar with the matter, although he will not hold the position of general counsel.
Tesla has changed its general counsel several times in recent years amid litigation. After Todd Maron left the company in December 2018, his successor, Dane Butswinkas, lasted just two months before being replaced by Jonathan Chang, and in late 2019 Tesla announced that Prescott, Teslas vice president of legal, would take on the role of acting general counsel.
In addition to overseeing all legal matters for Tesla, Prescott is also Teslas signature representative to NHTSA, the U.S. federal auto safety regulator, in response to the U.S. governments investigation and recall of public auto safety complaints.
Another change of head of legal affairs is expected to increase Teslas challenges in multiple lawsuits. A lawsuit filed last year by Tesla shareholders against Mr. Musks decision to buy SolarCity, originally set to begin in March, was delayed by the outbreak and is expected to resume this summer. In March, a Tesla shareholder named Chase Gharrity sued the company, alleging that Musks comments on social media caused potential damage to the public company. Garritys lawsuit alleges that Teslas board failed to appoint a general counsel who would hold Musk to securities laws and SEC agreements because of an agreement Tesla and Musk had with the SEC regarding social media comments.
In addition to Prescott, Luminar also announced Wednesday that it had poached its vice president of investor relations, Trey Campbell, from Intel. Shares of Luminar closed up 15.22 percent on Wednesday, boosted by news of high-profile executives joining the industry.
