What exactly is Sodium silicate?
Sodium silicateis commonly referred to as paohua , is an inorganic substance it's aqueous solution generally referred to as sodium sulfate which is a type of mineral adhesive. The chemical formula for it is Na2O*nSiO2, it is a silicate that is soluble inorganic and has a range of uses. Sodium silicate that is soluble in the water is colorless, lightly colored translucent or transparent massive glass body. It is typically used as a filler, fabric fire retardant, and adhesive.
What is Sodium Silicate used in?
Soaps and detergent
It is possible for sodium silicate to enhance the surface effects such as wetting with organic surfactants (reducing tension on the surface) and helps to keep tiny oil or dirt particles at a safe distance from the detergent, and enhancing the ability take dirt off the surface.
The salt's alkalinity enables it to counteract acidic soils and promote the emulsification of oil and the dispersion and dispersal of protein.
Packaging
The use of sodium silicate in a cardboard coating can increase the strength of the material and increase its resistance to the effects of moisture fire or grease as well as pests. Silicate is also employed as an oil repellent on its own.
Sodium silicate is a good choice as a pre-treatment for the application of other materials like paraffins, naphthalene chloride, wax, gum, nitrocellulose, varnish , and other coatings for cardboard. It creates a pore in the cardboard and decreases the water absorption on the paper, and thus reduces the amount topping coat required.
Construction
Soluble silicate could be used as a cement binder. When Portland is combined with cement components, they will undergo chemical reactions to make substances that have strong bonding properties. It is also used to improve the durability of concrete.
Mining industry
Soluble silicate is employed in numerous mineral enrichment process. One of the main uses of sodium silicate in flotation of ore is as an antiflocculant . It helps help disperse siliceous material that is not needed. A small amount of silicate with a concentration similar to that used for cleaning operations is required. Silicate's ability to create a sodium ion layer on the surface of particles is important for preparing the surface for specific separation. Sodium silicate helps to prevent wear and tear, thereby reducing the ball wearing in the mill.
Hydraulic treatment
Dilute anionic silica water solution provided by soluble silicate can inhibit the corrosion of metal surfaces.
As an ingredient in water, dissolved SiO2 prevents corrosion of metal storage tanks as well as distribution lines. It reduces corrosion of pipelines and pumps from acidic water (for instance, water from mine drainage) as well as reduces the likelihood of corrosion occurring during grinding ball rods in the mill; and lessens the chance of corrosion to equipment used in the process as an ingredient in spray drying, agglomeration or dry detergent formulations as well as metal parts of disheswashing and laundry equipment. It is also a component in the liquid in the 'permanent' auto cooling system. As an additive to water treatment chemicals in cooling towers and boilers.
