BEOL treatment, which is approximately 20nm long, involves copper being covered in tantalum first and TaN then coated with physical vapor deposition. Before machining (grinding/polishing), the barrier-coated copper is coated with more copper through PVD and then filled with electrolytic-coated copper.
Tantalum Nitride is also suitable to make thin-film resistors. This has the advantage that it forms a moist-resistant passivation dioxide film, as opposed with nickel-chromium resistors
